By now, you should have heard of the #IceBucketChallenge that’s taking social media by storm. From tech leaders like Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates to social media superstars like George Takei; everyone who is anyone is taking the icy plunge to raise funds for ALS. The premise of the challenge is simple: Once nominated, you have to overturn a bucket of icy water over your head or donate $100 to ALS (or a charity of your choice) within 24 hours. Once the challenge has been completed, you can in turn pick three other people to take the challenge as your teeth are chattering violently together.
Far be it from us to pass up on an opportunity to have some fun and do social good, Message Systems CEO Phillip Merrick and our founder George Schlossnagle have risen to this icy occasion – all in the name of raising funds and awareness for this great cause.
Not to be outdone, our Senior Counsel, Joal Barbehenn led his own team in the #IceBucketChallenge issuing an ultimatum for our West Coast colleagues: Make a splash or donate to ALS.
(Already, some of us over in the SF office on the West Coast have succumbed to the fear of being frozen in our chilly climate and gladly donated to the ALS.)
But all fun and games aside, Message Systems is proud to get behind the #IceBucketChallenge. Unlike other social media fads, the #IceBucketChallenge raises awareness and funds to seek a cure or treatment for a crippling illness – ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a degenerative illness that attacks nerve cells and leads to paralysis. There is no cure available and victims have a life expectancy of two to five years after diagnosis. For naysayers of the #IceBucketChallenge, here’s a quote from a press release by the ALS Association:
As of Monday, August 18, The ALS Association has received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 18). These donations have come from existing donors and 307,598 new donors to The Association.
Talk about doing social good with social media! For everyone who has yet to participate, we challenge you to take the #IceBucket Challenge within 24 hours or donate to a charity of your choice!
