People delete apps all of the time. As an app developer one of the most important things second to downloads (customer acquisition) is sustaining your user base (customer retention). Yet, people delete apps all the time for various reasons whether they’re discontent with lack of: functionality, usability, support, security or it simply isn’t worth the cost.
In compiling a list of why users might delete your app, we also wanted to give you ways to combat these issues.
Users Might Delete Your App Because:
- They are frustrated with the app crashing or being unstable
- Half the battle is getting them to download your app, but if it keeps crashing then you’ll need to do some functional testing on different devices and find out why it keeps crashing or freezes.
- They are annoyed by too much communication from your app
- Collect real-time feedback from your users. Create a preference center and let people choose the notifications they get. Or, consider not all users are created equal (free vs paid, for example) and send them messaging that only reinforces the value of your app.
- They are unhappy with their user experience
- Usability is a big one. The use of SDK makes it possible to seamlessly integrate survey questions into the same interface that your users are familiar with, which makes for a more organic, feedback process.
- They purchase a new device
- Create a nurture email campaign letting them know you miss them and want them to come back. Make sure you make it easy for them to download the app from their new mobile device with one click.
- They don’t have enough space on their current device
- Creating your app in the cloud allows you to not only reduce the overall footprint of your app, but also allows you to streamline the experience for the end user. Think AppleTV apps where everything seems so streamlined and instantaneous for the end user because most of the assets/elements are in the cloud.
- They download an app from another competitor
- People download competitive apps because they’re looking for a better deal or looking for functionality or features your app doesn’t have. Take, for example, Uber, Lyft, and Flywheel. You can summon any of them for a ride, but why do people have two or three of these apps on their phones in the first place? Sure, there’s the whole conflict of convenience versus surge pricing with Uber, the friendliness of Lyft, and a driver who actually knows where he is going with Flywheel. The point is, figure out why people would want to download a competitor app. What aren’t they happy with about your app?
- They find a free or less expensive option
- If you are competing with other apps in your industry then make sure you clearly spell out the differentiators of why your app is better. Do some research on the competition, read their message boards and forums to see what features they lack and add those features to your app.
